The European Union parliamentary meeting on Tuesday culminated in the agreement of a joint project between the Union and UNICEF under the name #EmergencyLessons. The project aims at making secondary school students and the general public aware of the importance and the role of education in countries affected by war, natural disaster or other crisis situations. Slovakia is involved in this campaign along with six other EU countries.
"As part of this campaign, I travelled to Ukraine; we visited places that are just a few kilometres away from the contact line in the cities of Kramatorsk, Svitlodarsk and Toretsk. What I saw there affected me deeply. I realised that this situation concerns us more than you think. It's not a conflict that is taking place somewhere far away but right next to us. From hour to hour, from day to day, our lives can change radically," said dancer and choreographer Jaro Bekr, who for more than two years has been involved as an ambassador of UNICEF.
The #EmergencyLessons project is also being supported by Slovak politician and MEP Jana Žitňanská (Nova). "I greatly appreciate the work of UNICEF which has prepared this campaign with the help of the European Union. Today we had the opportunity to hear the testimonies of two schoolgirls living in Iraq, who had to flee from their homes due to war, but now they have the chance to attend school again," said Žitňanská.
