Constitutional officials’ salary freeze to be fast-tracked

Lawmakers will discuss a motion to freeze the salaries of constitutional officials in a fast-tracked procedure, Parliament decided with 106 votes on Tuesday. If the bill, sponsored by Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD), is greenlighted, the salaries of constitutional officials, MPs and Government ministers, but not judges and prosecutors, will remain frozen in 2017. "There's a need to continue consolidation measures in 2017 with an eye towards securing a gradual decrease in the public administration deficit and securing a balanced budget," reads the proposal. The salary freeze is projected to save €3.5 million.
