Education ministry proposes deep changes for universities

Not awarding titles of professor and docent anymore, inclusion of experts in the teaching process and accepting more foreign students: these are some of the main goals which the Education Ministry has proposed in order to change the education system within universities over the next ten years, wrote the news website Aktuality.sk on Tuesday. "The universities will continue to have docents and professors, however not based on habitation and inauguration processes leading to awarding the scientific-pedagogic title. The titles awarded until now, would stay valid," reads the ministry's report. The schools would also have to be more reflective towards the labour market and its needs. For this purpose, the ministry suggests a mapping system of the alumni's ability to find jobs. According to the proposal, students should have the chance to collect credits not only for passing their exams but also for internships or volunteering work. The ministry also suggests that students should have more flexibility in creating their own profile as an alumni and the employees of universities should have more options to adjust the curriculum.

Renáta Králiková of the think-tank MESA10 likes the proposed changes. However she believes the ministry should also formulate how it plans to increase the quality of the universities' management. She also believes the proposals lack plans to strengthen the fund support of schools.
