EU Foreign Ministers adopt joint stance to Donald Trump’s victory

Respecting the outcome of the US elections, keeping partnership between the EU and the USA and an active role of the EU, which should actively and clearly formulate expectations on the American government while it will be formed: these are the main points on which the EU foreign ministers agreed at their extraordinary meeting in Brussel, in reaction to the outcome of the US elections.

"We cannot just sit and wait to see what is going to happen. We will explain to the forming cabinet that there are some important things for us which were doubted throughout the presidential campaign, such as the Iranian nuclear agreement or climate agreement," explained Slovak Foreign Minister Miroslav Lajčák. He expects that the question of defence will be discussed more often with Donald Trump as the President of the US. UK Foreign Minister Boris Johnson, who called the session pointless and his Hungarian colleague Péter Szijjártó did not take part at the meeting. As Lajčák said, it is a form of a gesture with political motivation.

Slovak minister believes that it is natural that, as the entire world discusses the US election, so do the EU's Foreign Ministers. The extraordinary session was initiated by High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini.
