Clear pro-European stances, a righteous and strong social state, the balancing of economic freedoms and social rights, clear interest for voters and better communication with people: these are the main program theses which the largest governing party SMER-SD introduced at its conference last weekend. These should be the cornerstones of the party's new program, which is to be introduced this December.
Apart from talking about the future of SMER-SD, Prime Minister and the party's leader Robert Fico, also criticised the opposition. "We are a successful political entity, which does not have four members and which is not lead by a person linked with the mafia in the past, said the head of the party. However, one of the founders of the party, MEP Monika Flašíková-Beňová expressed more criticism of the SMER-SD. "We have to be more consequent, as words such corruption and clientelism lead to our party. We have a good program and this will die if some of the failures prevail. I hope we will be able to eliminate them," said Flašíková Beňová.
The party's conference took place at a time when a new poll had been released. It indicates that in spite of having the largest support among voters, the party continues to lose its dominant position. The current governing coalition would still have a majority in the parliament, however, only by four MPs.
