Peter Sagan became the first Slovak in history to wear the yellow jersey for the leading cyclist at Tour de France, on Sunday. A Tinkoff team member won the second stage of 103rd year of the world's most prestigious race. This was Sagan's first TDF stage win after three years and his fifth win overall. However, at the moment of the victory, Peter didn't realise he had actually won.
I thought I ended the third at the finish line. I thought two guys were in a breakaway and that we were sprinting for the third and the fourth place. So it was a surprise for me.
said the Slovak cyclist.
Aside from the yellow jersey, Sagan is currently wearing two others; the rainbow and the green ones. Peter Sagan has been wearing the rainbow jersey all season long since his win at the World Championship in Richmond, the US, in September last year. The green jersey is for the best sprinter at the Tour. So far, Sagan has turned all four of his appearances at the tour into overall wins among sprinters.
I am very happy. I want to thank the owner of the team Oleg Tinkoff for creating such a great team for Tour de France and I am also grateful for the yellow jersey that I am wearing for the first time.
said Sagan. Nevertheless, the President of the Slovak Cycling Federation Peter Privara says Peter Sagan will probably not keep the yellow jersey for too long.
We know Peter is not able to win the whole tour at the moment. However, it is said that in a few years he could be transformed into such a racer.
