The British referendum on staying in the EU that is taking place on Thursday will have an impact on the Slovak Presidency of the EU Council. Therefore the Brexit vote is being closely monitored by all top Slovak representatives, most of whom hope that Britons will choose to stay in the Union. Foreign and European Affairs Minister Miroslav Lajčák believes the UK's decision to remain a part of the circle of yellow stars would be mutually beneficial for both Britain and the EU. However, he adds that "we will respect the will of British voters." Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico is also ready for both alternatives. "If the UK decides to leave, the changes would be far reaching. If they choose to stay, a deep discussion will be needed," stated Fico.
The Slovak National Bank warned of the possible consequences Brexit may have. According to the bank's data, it would decrease the growth of the Slovak economy by 0.34% with a negative influence on employment as well. Many Slovak entrepreneurs have also voiced their preference for the UK to stay. According to Vladimír Bílý, the director for the Central and Eastern European region of a traditional British company called Gleeds, Brexit could also complicate the transfer of workers and know-how for the Jaguar Land Rover investment. The British carmaker is building a plant in Slovakia that should open in 2018.
Moreover, Slovak betting agencies have registered an increase in bets on whether the UK will remain in the EU. Approximately 60 percent of Slovaks believe that Britain will stay, while 40 percent think that it will leave. In Slovak betting agencies so far the odds strongly favour a vote for 'In'. Richard Slušný of Nike said that the highest bet, worth €1,000, has been placed on Britain's remaining in the EU. If the British vote 'In', the person will win €1450.
