About one third of Slovaks plans to spend their summer holiday in Slovakia this year. This finding comes from an analysis by Poštová Banka, based on data from Eurostat. "This is very positive news in terms of tourism and regional development, as the holidaymakers won't 'export' their money outside Slovakia's borders, but they will support the domestic economy," added the bank's analyst Jana Glasová. Also the interest of foreign tourists in visiting Slovakia has been growing steadily. From January to the end of March 2016, the country hosted nearly 380,000 guests from abroad, which is a 24% increase if compared to the same period last year. Traditionally, most foreign visitors come to Slovakia from the Czech Republic.
According to findings from the Slovak Association of Travel Agencies, due to the global security situation, Slovaks have changed the target destination for this year's holiday abroad. Travel agencies record lower interest in holidays in Egypt, Tunisia and Turkey, which last year were among the top choices for Slovaks. The most visible drop appeared in connection to Tunisia, which saw two terror attacks last summer. This year around 14% of tourists from Slovakia plan to spend their holidays in Croatia.
