Victory over Fascism Day highlights fight against extremism

Victory over Fascism Day is a public holiday in Slovakia celebrated on May 8. On that day, President Andrej Kiska took part in a special edition of public broadcaster Radio Television Slovakia's political discussion program devoted to the victory over fascism and Nazism. The discussion was located in the recently opened Holocaust Museum in Sereď (Trnava region). "I think that two basic messages need to be said in connection with this anniversary: we will not forget and we will be thankful [for our liberation]," said the Slovak President. He also expressed his serious concerns about the future of Slovak politics, especially concerning the growth of extremist opinions and people's distrust in politicians, which resulted in great support of parties such as People's Party - Our Slovakia. Its leader, Marián Kotleba, was the only leader among the parties that made it into the Parliament who was not invited to the Presidential Palace to meet with the president. Kiska reiterated that he will not sit at one table with him. "We should admit that we do have extremism and fascism here. We must draw a very clear and strong demarcation line here and say: this is a democracy, while this is extremism and fascism," said the president. On Monday, 9^th May official commemorative activities will continue at the Slavín memorial and military cemetery in Bratislava.
