Justice Minister Lucia Žitňanská (Most-Hid) would like to change the General Prosecutor's (GP) Office to an Attorney General's office, according to TASR press agency. The reform of the GP Office didn't appear in the Government Manifesto. "I'm convinced that the existing legal regulation of the GP Office isn't good and sooner or later we'll have to deal with how it should be incorporated into the system - whether we'd want an attorney general's office or to stick with the General Prosecutor's office, but based on a different model of functioning", stated Žitňanská in Parliament on Thursday in reaction to Opposition MP Alojz Baránik's comments on the Manifesto. She recalled that there have been efforts to change the GP Office in the past as well, but there have never been enough votes for it.
The Opposition MP emphasised that not all judges are bad, but he pointed out that higher posts in the Slovak justice system - including the Judicial Council - are reserved for less-than-decent people and for communists. Baránik doesn't believe that Cabinet will improve judiciary or the GP Office. "The Government Manifesto doesn't count on some real changes to the judiciary in this electoral term", he said. "Just as not all politicians are thieves, not all judges are criminals. I refuse to label all judges as communists and sociopaths. We need to support all courageous and honest judges in order for them to be able to cope up with problems within their ranks", responded Žitňanská. "We need to put every judicial processes and proceedings under the limelight. "We must do a lot for courts to function effectively", she added.
