Solutions to migration crisis seem to be effective

According to the Slovak Foreign and European Affairs Minister Miroslav Lajčák, the measures to halt migration flows approved by the European Union in mid-March have started working. He bases this claim on his observations in Greece and Turkey, which he visited along with his Dutch, French, Italian, Maltese and Portuguese counterparts. According to the ministers, the protection of the EU's external borders has already improved. Moreover, Greece has managed to build a comprehensive system of migrant registration and reception centres in a short time. However, Slovak MEP Eduard Kukan (SDKÚ-DS) is of a different opinion, as he told TASR on Saturday. According to him, the European Union is still failing to cope with the migration crisis. Kukan thinks that control of the EU's external borders should have already been reinforced at the time when the crisis first burst. "Then we would not have had to face the situation that we have so many migrants in Europe," said Kukan, adding that a single European position on solving the issue is still missing. The Slovak Presidency of Council of the EU, which will follow the current Dutch one in the second half of this year, will continue the work that has already been started in this field. "This is a European-wide issue, and it will also be on our presidential desk. It will be one of the main issues and priorities," stressed Slovak Foreign and European Affairs Minister Miroslav Lajčák.
