Zuzana Števulová receives Women of Courage award

United States Secretary of State John Kerry decorated Zuzana Števulová with the International Women of Courage award on Tuesday in recognition of her substantial personal involvement in the courageous fight for human rights, TASR learnt from the US Embassy to Slovakia on the same day. Števulová, director of non-profit NGO League for Human Rights, is one of the 14 women from across the world who received the award. The International Women of Courage award is given to females who display extraordinary courage or leadership while championing human rights, equality for women or contributing to social progress in the face of severe security risks, said the embassy. This year marks the 10th anniversary of awarding the International Women of Courage award, bestowed since 2007 to almost 100 women from 60 countries. On the occasion, Kerry highlighted Števulová's fight for the rights of migrants and she voiced her belief that it's a moral obligation of all to ensure that migrants and refugees are treated with respect, and that they are guaranteed their human rights and safety. "We don't need a lot to do that. All the tools and means are at our disposal; sometimes all it takes is a small group of vigilant and determined citizens to effect a change", she said.
