The 2013 campaign of the European Mobility Week (EMW) aims to raise awareness about the impact of transport on air quality, and encourages citizens across Europe to improve their health and well-being by altering their transport behaviour. The campaign officially launches today with more than 2,000 cities in 43 countries implementing activities to create a more sustainable mobility culture.
Slovakia has once again taken part in the event, with nine cities across the country highlighting alternative forms of transport to the car. Bratislava is leading the charge with the offer of free public transport during the daytime for anyone who holds a drivers license. Drivers will be able to board Bratislava-based transport free of charge only on daytime city-based routes, as the initiative doesn't apply to night time public transport. As part of the week-long event, a race will take place on Tuesday between cyclists, motorists, and public-transport passengers to see who can get from one location to another, first. The winners in last year’s race were those who took part on bicycles. As part of the, “In Town without My Car!” program, six of Slovakia’s participating cities will be setting aside areas to be reserved solely for pedestrians, cyclists, and public transport for at least one whole day where bike-sharing and car-sharing demonstrations will take place, as well as selected parking spaces being occupied by table-tennis tables, armchairs, and potted plants.
