The general elections will be held in Slovakia Saturday, March 5. The results will be announced Sunday, March 6 at around midday.
No political party had withdrawn from the general elections by the deadline of 7 a.m. on Thursday, March 3 "despite declarations of the representatives of some of the political parties," as the chairman of the State commission for the elections and controlling of financing of political parties Eduard Bárány said. He was referring to the announcement of the leader of the Demokrati Slovenska - Ľudo Kaník political party regarding its withdrawal from the race. "Mr Kaník has not submitted anything, the voters will receive the ballots also for his party and members of the district commission nominated by this party will remain in their positions. Votes for this party will be included in the final result," explained the chairman of the State commission for the elections and controlling of financing of political parties.
And thus there are 23 political subjects running for the elections. They withdrew 25 candidates while 7 candidates resigned themselves. The final number of the official candidates for members of the Slovak parliament is 2882. There will be lists of candidates who resigned or were withdrawn hanging on the doors of every room in which voting takes place. In the case voters applying their right for preference, the candidate with more preferential votes will win.
The general elections are ruled by the new legislation, the act on the conditions of performing the right to vote and the act on election campaign. This will be the 9th time since 1989 that Slovaks will enter general elections. There will be almost 5000 policemen safeguarding public order during the vote. According to a law on elections, observers deployed by international organisations are also able to be present in polling stations, as well as other people who have informed the commission they are interested in observing the polling process and the vote counting.
