Mountaineer Lenka Poláčková has become the first Slovak woman to reach the summit of K2, the world’s second-highest mountain (8,611 m). She joined the climb as part of a two-member expedition with her husband Ján, the Everest Today portal reported.
According to the site, Poláčková completed the demanding ascent via the Abruzzi Spur route in stable but challenging conditions. She attempted the climb without supplemental oxygen. Further details about the ascent are not yet available. Conditions on K2 have been especially difficult this year due to lower-than-usual snow levels.
This is Poláčková’s second eight-thousander, following her 2024 ascent of Mount Everest without oxygen, making her the tenth woman in the world to achieve this feat. She has also climbed the highest peaks on all continents, including Alaska’s Denali (Mount McKinley). Before Poláčková, only two Slovaks – Peter Božík and Peter Hámor – had summited K2.
