Slovakia’s under-21 national football team lost 2–3 to tournament favorites Spain in the opening match of the 25th UEFA European Under-21 Championship on Wednesday.

Despite trailing 0–2 at halftime at the National Football Stadium in Bratislava, the Slovaks mounted a comeback with goals from Samuel Kopásek and Tomáš Suslov (from the penalty spot), before conceding a decisive 90th-minute goal from Spain’s Cesar Tarrega, who secured all three points for the previous tournament’s runner-up in Group A.

The group’s second match took place later Wednesday in Trnava, where Italy faced Romania at 21:00. Slovakia’s next game is scheduled for Saturday, June 14, at 21:00 in Trnava against Italy. Coach Jaroslav Kentoš’s squad will close the group stage on Tuesday, June 17, at 21:00 in Bratislava against Romania.

The top two teams from each of the four groups will advance to the quarterfinals. The championship, lasting over two weeks, will culminate in the final on Saturday, June 28, in Bratislava.
