Slovakia prepares to host under-21 European football championship

In less than two months, Slovakia will host the biggest sporting event of the year — the UEFA Under-21 European Football Championship, taking place in eight cities from June 11 to 28 and broadcast by Slovak Television. Organizers report that preparations are going smoothly, despite strict requirements from UEFA and the 16 participating countries. “Each team has a designated base — a hotel with an adjoining training pitch,” said organizing committee member Marek Majerčák. Beyond the eight stadiums, organizers have secured 17 training grounds and hotels for teams and referees.

Some nations, such as England and Germany, have special requests regarding catering, cultural events, and pitch conditions. “The Germans, for example, require top-quality turf even at training sites,” added committee member Peter Hamaj.

Representatives from the participating countries are already visiting Slovakia to inspect facilities and ensure fan experiences and safety meet expectations. “We collect information and consult on the conditions for fans so they can have the best possible experience,” noted Iulia Nicuaeová-Cuciureanová from the Romanian Football Federation.

Fan zones at stadiums will offer entertainment, competitions, food, and music before matches. Tickets for Slovakia’s matches, particularly against Spain and Italy, are nearly sold out, while some remain for the match against Romania.

All championship games will be broadcast on Slovak Television.
