On the occasion of the 280th anniversary of the birth of Móric Beňovský (Maurice Benyovszky), we explore the extraordinary life of this 18th-century soldier, traveller and author, whose remarkable journey took him from Central Europe to Kamchatka, across the Pacific and ultimately to Madagascar, where he claimed the title of “Ampansakabé,” or “King of Kings.”
How much of his remarkable story is historical fact, and how much is legend? What do his memoirs reveal — and conceal — about the man behind the myth?
We discuss Beňovský’s life, ambitions and expeditions to Madagascar, as well as the colonial context in which he lived, with Miroslav Musil — a diplomat, historian, author, polyglot and traveller who has dedicated years to researching Beňovský. Musil has authored numerous publications on his life and legacy and traced his activities across more than twenty countries in Europe, Asia, Africa and America. He is also the founder and chairman of the Association Count Benyowsky’s Friends.
