On Monday, Slovakia marks the 20th anniversary of the tragic death of Ján Langoš, a dissident who served as Minister of the Interior of the Czech and Slovak Federal Republic from 1990 to 1992.
In May 2003, he founded the Institute for the Memory of the Nation, a specialized archival and scientific research public institution that collects and processes information related to the period of oppression between 1939 and 1989. The institute also makes documents from the former state security services available to the public.
Langoš died in a tragic car accident on 15 June 2006.
