According to the census from 2021, 56% of Slovakia’s population identified as Roman Catholic, 5.3% as Evangelical, and 4% as Greek Catholic, also known as Uniates. Nearly 24% declared no religious affiliation. For the country’s predominantly Christian population, Holy Week began last Sunday—Palm Sunday. On this day, priests bless palm branches and catkins, symbols of the coming spring. Holy Week then culminates in the Easter Triduum, which lasts from the evening of Holy Thursday until Easter Sunday evening.
Each day of that week had its own meaning, explains ethnographer Zora Mintálová Zubercová, author of Annual Holidays and Customs, published at the end of 2025.
Christian and pre-Christian customs come together in Easter festivities, adds Miroslava Zahumenská in this Good Friday special.
