Romani history with Julieta Rotaru

In June, the annual conference Aktuálny stav rómskych štúdií (The Current State of Romani Studies), organized by the Documentation and Information Centre of Roma Culture in Prešov, was attended by Professor Julieta Rotaru. She is a contract lecturer in Romani and Sanskrit at the National Institute of Oriental Languages and Civilizations (INALCO) in Paris and teaches a course on the Vlax Romani dialect at the École Pratique des Hautes Études.

She also serves as the managing editor of Romani Studies: Journal of the Gypsy Lore Society, published by Liverpool University Press, and is the general secretary of this scholarly society, which was established in 1888.

For Slovakia Today, she discusses the origin of the word salaš, which in Slovak refers either to an enclosed space for sheep or a pub serving traditional Slovak food. However, she also reveals the uncomfortable truth connected to the history of Romani enslavement in Romania.
