Mandatory math school-leaving exams proposed from 2030/2031

Mathematics is set to become a mandatory subject in Slovakia's school-leaving exams starting from the 2030/2031 school year, Education Minister Tomáš Drucker (Hlas-SD) announced on Monday. The proposed change would apply to students entering the first year of secondary school in 2027.

A basic-level mathematics exam would be required for students at grammar schools, secondary technical schools, and many vocational secondary schools. However, it would not apply to students at conservatories, sports schools, or business academies.

At grammar schools, the exams would have two levels: third-year students would take the basic level, while only selected final-year students—particularly those planning to study technical disciplines at university—would sit for the advanced level.

According to officials, the goal is to improve mathematical literacy and essential skills such as logical reasoning, problem-solving, and critical thinking. Several European countries, including Poland, Hungary, Germany, and Austria, already have similar mandatory exams in place.
