Slovakia’s WHO rep on pandemic agreement vote decision

On Monday, May 20, 2025, delegates at the World Health Assembly formally endorsed a pandemic pact aimed at fostering joint action to address future pandemics. The approval of the agreement by the WHO was largely seen as a formality, following overwhelming support from an assembly committee after a vote was initiated by Slovakia. However, Slovakia, along with ten other countries, chose to abstain from the vote.

Later, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico took to social media to voice his opposition to the treaty. He stated that the coalition party Hlas-SD had discussed the treaty's potential but ultimately concluded, "There is none. Smer-SD will never support it. It is a bad and dangerous agreement." He also expressed pride in Slovakia’s role, noting, "We initiated a vote within the World Health Organization, joined by countries such as Poland, Italy, the Netherlands, Bulgaria, and Israel."

To gain a clearer understanding of what transpired and what lies ahead, Martina Greňová Šimkovičová reached out to Professor Jozef Šuvada, Slovakia’s representative on the World Health Organization Executive Board.
