The city of Prešov has provided the first two apartments under the Housing First programme, which was launched in the city in 2024. This is an innovative approach to ending homelessness, based on the principle that housing is the first step in providing effective support.
As Alena Vachnová, chairwoman of the DEDO Foundation's board of directors, said in Prešov on Tuesday, there is currently strong interest in expanding the project, which has proven effective in local conditions. She added that housing is considered a necessary first step in improving people’s living situations.
The Housing First programme has been successfully implemented around the world for more than 40 years, with 80 to 95 percent of participants able to maintain their housing long-term. Professional support is provided by a team of social workers, psychologists, lawyers, and other experts who offer assistance tailored to the needs of each family.
