Bratislava’s 80th liberation anniversary

The 80th anniversary of the liberation of Bratislava was commemorated today, Friday, April 4th, with a solemn tribute and the laying of wreaths at the Victory Monument on Eugene Suchoň Square. Representatives from the Office of the President of the Slovak Republic, the Bratislava Self-Governing Region (BSK), and the city highlighted the significance of the liberation in the context of the ongoing war in Ukraine. BSK Chairman Juraj Droba expressed gratitude to those who contributed to freedom and reminded attendees that around 7,000 soldiers died in the battles for Bratislava. Mayor Matúš Vallo emphasized the importance of freedom, especially in light of the ongoing conflict in Eastern Slovakia. Later this afternoon, another commemorative event will take place at Slavín, where Richard Raši (Hlas-SD), and Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) will honour the fallen and mark the 65th anniversary of the opening of the memorial.
