Protests over NGOs law

Protests over NGOs law

On Thursday, a protest was held in Bratislava, with people marching from Freedom Square to Parliament. Organizers from "Peace for Ukraine" and the Platform for Democracy oppose a law proposal concerning non-governmental organizations (NGOs), claiming it suppresses freedom and is unconstitutional. The "Peace for Ukraine" initiative calls it a "Russian law" and warns it leads to autocracy. Prime Minister Fico rejected these claims, asserting the law is European, not linked to Russian, American, or Israeli laws. Protests are also being held on Friday around Slovakia.

The government has agreed with the initiative of MPs from the coalition SNS party, who proposed an amendment to the law on NGOs. While it is not yet the final version, MP Adam Lučanský indicated that one more change is forthcoming, though he did not specify what it would be. The proposal seeks to introduce more obligations for NGOs with political influence, aiming for greater transparency in their funding and activities. However, the Via Iuris Civic Association rejects the proposal, calling it discriminatory and unconstitutional, a stance shared by the opposition.
