Today, President of the Slovak Republic Peter Pellegrini honoured the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Bratislava by laying a wreath at the Slavín monument in Bratislava. "Let us show our respect and gratitude to all those who contributed to the return of freedom to our homeland. Soviet, Romanian, and Slovak soldiers, insurgents, resistance fighters and members of other nations. Many of them paid the highest possible price," he said on the occasion of the anniversary.
Bratislava was liberated during the Bratislava-Brnian Operation by Soviet and Romanian troops, who were on the right flank of the 2nd Ukrainian Front. 28 Soviet and 14 Romanian divisions were involved in the fighting. The fighting lasted for two days.
Spokesman of the municipality Peter Bubla informed that on Friday, the 4th of April, on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the end of the battles for Bratislava, a commemoration ceremony will be held with laying of wreaths at the Victory Monument on Eugen Suchoň Square.
