On March 25, 2025, Slovakia marks 37 years since the Candlelight Manifestation in Bratislava, a major protest against the communist regime. Organized by underground Catholic communities, it called for religious freedom, human rights, and the appointment of bishops for unfilled dioceses.
In 1988, František Mikloško, long time politician who at the time was a member of a secret church, helped organize the protest, despite government opposition and arrests. Thousands gathered at Hviezdoslavovo Square on March 25, 1988, and security forces used water cannons and tear gas to disperse the crowd.
