We often hear stories of Czech and Slovak protestors clashing with police in 1989 during the Velvet Revolution. Just reading these words is enough for violent images from newsreels to flash into our minds. Yet these clashes involved only a small percentage of the population during the beginning of the end for Communism in present-day Slovakia.
So what was it like for everyday citizens near the border during these revolutionary times? To find out, Gavin Shoebridge headed to a village right on the then-heavily armed border: where the real Iron Curtain once stood.
