Following the murder of Maltese investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia and the murder of the Slovak couple, in September 2022, the European Commission published the proposal for a regulation “establishing a common framework for media services in the internal market European Media Freedom Act amending Directive 2010/13/EU - the Audiovisual Media Services Directive.
“When and if investigative journalists are targeted or attacked, and in tragic cases killed, this is an ultimate form of censorship, and the public and audience can more clearly understand it as a sign of the impact that a journalist was making (or about to make) with his/her work,” stated Mirta Lourenco, UNESCO head of Media development for RSI in 2022.
On March 13, 2024, the European Media Freedom Act was adopted by the European Parliament. Explaining the need behind such a regulation for RSI in 2024 was Vera Jourova, the then Vice President of the European Commission for Values and Transparency.
"The Freedom Act is just the first step," says Editor-in-Chief of Slovak daily SME Beata Balogova, who was at the initial talks about adopting this European regulation.
In memory of investigative journalist Jan Kuciak and his fianceé, archaeologist Martina Kusnirova, massive protests are to be held today, 21 February 2025, in 55 towns all across Slovakia and 16 cities worldwide.
