Negative attitudes toward Roma are openly expressed by one-third of respondents in Slovakia, while only five percent hold a positive view. Another 61 percent remain neutral. Criticism is particularly strong among residents of eastern Slovakia and the Bratislava region, according to a December survey conducted by the Focus agency for the Office of the Slovak Government Plenipotentiary for Roma Communities.
Conversely, in the Trenčín Region, negative attitudes were significantly less common—not only compared to the regions but also to the national average. The survey indicates that personal experience strongly influences respondents’ views on Roma. In this context, the Roma Plenipotentiary highlighted that many people form their opinions based solely on media portrayals and persistent stereotypes.
