Slovakia celebrates 32 years as a member of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Czechoslovakia was one of the 20 founding states in 1945, and after its division, just one month after the establishment of Slovak statehood, the independent Slovak Republic joined the organization on 9 February 1993.
The Slovak Commission for UNESCO oversees UNESCO’s activities in Slovakia, while the Permanent Delegation of Slovakia to UNESCO is based in Paris. One of the organization’s key tasks is the creation of the List of World Cultural and Natural Heritage. According to the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, this list includes six cultural and two natural monuments in Slovakia.
