Superhero stories have recently enjoyed a massive revival in popularity thanks to comic books and action movies, however, even Slovak historical myths and tales are full of similar characters.
Because the Slovak nation has always been struggling with difficult living conditions, one of the most famous fighters against poverty was Juraj Jánošík, a robber who allegedly stole from the rich and gave to the poor, but also had some magic features added to his legend, such as bullets not being able to touch him. However, the stories about Juraj Jánošík are not the only superhero stories to be found in Slovak literature. Traditional Slovak fairy tales are full of people with exceptional characteristics, one of them being for example Lomidrevo, whose name refers to his ability to break wood with his bare hands.
