In the morning of the 30th of October 1918, representatives of political parties active in the territory of upper Hungary gathered in the town of Martin and established a new representative political body, the Slovak National Council. In the afternoon of the very same day, this body declared its wish to apply the right of self-determination for Slovaks together with Czechs in the document known as the Declaration of the Slovak Nation or Martin Declaration.
