Sobibor: the final station for Slovak Jews

Sobibor: the final station for Slovak Jews

"If we wish to live and to bequeath life to our offspring, if we believe that we are to pave the way to the future, then we must first of all not forget." These are the words of prof. Ben-Zion Dinur, a Ukrainian born Jewish historian and politician. The oppressive treatment of Slovak people of Jewish origin officially began with the adoption of the so-called Jewish Code in September of 1941, the first transports to the concentration camps followed a few months later, in the spring of 1942. While Auschwitz concentration camp is often the synonym to Holocaust in Europe, majority of Slovak Jewry ended their lives in not that well known Sobibor. Zuzana Botiková speaks about the Slovak connection to Sobibor with members of the Holocaust documentation centres in Slovakia as well as in Israel.
