After allegations of corruption and scandal, many Slovaks mock the police force and some don’t believe they have the best interests of the citizens at heart.
In an attempt to refresh the image of the police force, and to clean up the activities of its officers, the Slovak Police Chief, Tibor Gaspar announced last year that a crackdown is underway – even to the point of checking out how polite officers are to members of the public. A problem which isn’t quite so easy to solve however is that of police shortages. There just aren’t enough officers around, according to smaller communities. Gavin Shoebridge takes a look at two towns in particular which aim to fix this problem themselves.
