Last year Slovakia granted 1,855 residence permits for citizens of countries from outside the European Union who wanted to work or do business in Slovakia. This figure is higher than in 2011 but almost half of the one from 2008 when the economic crisis stroke.
More than half of these people are well educated but not all of them have jobs matching their skills and some use Slovakia as an entrance gate to the market of richest countries in the European Union. Ukrainians and South Koreans employed by the car production cluster around the Kia company dominate the statistics. Anca Dragu wondered if Slovakia is well prepared to welcome them.
