Vocabulary

farba (pl. farby) = colour (pl. colours)

Aká je to farba? = What colour is that?

modrá (farba) = blue (colour)

červená = red

žltá = yellow

zelená = green

ružová = pink

fialová = purple / violet

oranžová = orange

hnedá = brown

tyrkysová = turquoise

svetloružová = light pink

tmavoružová = dark pink

sivá / šedá = grey

čierna = black

biela = white

Note 1: When Slovak speakers name colours on their own, they use the feminine form. That’s because the Slovak word for colour, “farba”, is feminine. In practice, words such as “modrá” (blue), “červená” (red), or “zelená” (green) are shortened forms of expressions like “modrá farba”, “červená farba”, and “zelená farba”.

Note 2: Colours in Slovak behave like adjectives, which means their endings change to match the gender of the noun they describe. For example, “modrá farba” (blue colour) is feminine, “modrý dom” (blue house) is masculine, and “modré auto” (blue car) is neutral. This agreement applies to all colours.
