Vocabulary

Deň detí = Children’s Day

dieťa = child

deti = children

hrať sa = to play

Hráme sa hry. = We are playing games.

vonku = outside

vnútri = inside

ihrisko = playground

Deti sa hrajú na ihrisku. = The children are playing on the playground.

detská radosť = children’s joy

nájsť si nových kamarátov = to make new friends

bežať = to run

skákať = to jump

hojdačka = swing

hojdať sa na hojdačke = to swing on a swing

šmykľavka = slide

šmýkať sa na šmykľavke = to slide down a slide

pieskovisko = sandbox

Deti sa hrajú na pieskovisku. = The children are playing in the sandbox.

Note 1: The Slovak verb “hrať sa” (to play) is a reflexive verb, which means it normally requires the reflexive pronoun sa. For example: “Hráme sa hry” (We are playing games) or “Deti sa hrajú na ihrisku” (The children are playing on the playground). Without sa, the verb hrať usually has a different meaning and is used for playing a musical instrument (with a preposition), a sport, or a role, for example: “Hrám na gitaru” (I play the guitar) or “Hrám futbal” (I play football).
