Note 1: In Slovak, prepositions determine the case of the noun that follows. When describing location, the prepositions v (in) and na (on) are most commonly used with the locative case — for example “izba” (nominative) becomes “v izbe” (in the room), “podlaha → na podlahe” (on the floor), “stôl → na stole” (on the table).
Note 2: Slovak adjectives and possessive pronouns always agree with the gender (and case) of the noun: masculine — “nový nábytok” (new furniture), “môj byt” (my flat), feminine — “malá skriňa” (small wardrobe), “moja izba” (my room), and neutral — “(moje) veľké okno” ((my) big window). They also change in cases “v mojej izbe” (in my room).
Note 3: Unlike English, Slovak does not typically use an equivalent of there is/are at the beginning of the sentence — instead, the location (when there's one) comes first: “V izbe je jedno okno” (There is one window in the room), “Na podlahe je koberec” (There is a carpet on the floor), “Na stole je lampa” (There is a lamp on the table), “Na okne sú záclony” (There are curtains on the window).
