Window to the World: Youngstown – Spišská Nová Ves

Window to the World: Youngstown – Spišská Nová Ves

November 1989 changed everything. After the fall of the Communist regime during the Velvet Revolution, Slovaks who had emigrated to the United States—often generations back—were finally able to come home, reconnect, and meet relatives they had known only from old family stories. Many no longer spoke Slovak, but the sense of belonging was still there.

One of the people who helped turn those emotional reunions into a lasting connection was Slovak expatriate Steven Bacon. Thanks to him, a partnership between Spišská Nová Ves and Youngstown—often called “American Spiš”—was born in 1991. And more than three decades later, it’s still going strong.

In this part of our series, Martina Greňová Šimkovičová takes you inside that unique relationship and shows how it continues to bring people together.
