Slovak Sound Check Episode 27: Wish Like a Local

With the holiday season just around the corner, this episode of Slovak Sound Check brings you the essential Slovak wishes you’ll hear — and want to use — before heading home and saying goodbye to colleagues, or classmates. Veronika and Sean guide you through everyday phrases like “Pekný víkend” (Have a nice weekend), as well as seasonal wishes such as “Pokojné sviatky” (Peaceful holidays) and “Krásne Vianoce” (Merry/Beautiful Christmas). A warm, practical lesson to help you sound natural, polite, and perfectly Slovak during the Christmas season.

Vocabulary

želanie = wish

Oddýchni/te si. = Get some rest (informal / formal)

Pokojné sviatky. = Peaceful holidays.

Vianoce = Christmas

Krásne Vianoce. = Merry / Beautiful Christmas.

Požehnané Vianoce. = Blessed Christmas.

Šťastné a veselé (Vianoce)! = Merry and Happy Christmas!

Note 1: In Slovak, adjectives like “pekný / pekná / pekné” (nice, pretty) and “krásny / krásna / krásne” (beautiful) change their endings to agree with the gender and number of the noun they describe. This is why you hear different forms in wishes and greetings, such as “pekný deň” (a nice day – masculine), “peknú dovolenku” (a nice holiday – feminine, accusative), or “krásne Vianoce” (beautiful Christmas – plural). In everyday Slovak, these adjectives are very common in short wishes and greetings, often used without a verb, where the adjective alone expresses the wish.
