Episode 17: Describe Your Day

In this episode of Slovak Sound Check, Veronika and Sean walk you through a full day in Slovak — from getting up in the morning to going to bed at night. You’ll learn practical phrases for everyday routines like “vstávam” (I get up), “idem do práce” (I go to work), and “idem spať” (I go to sleep). Along the way, you’ll pick up the useful “dám si” pattern (I’ll have / I’ll get myself), discover reflexive verbs such as “umyjem sa” (I wash myself), and get a quick grammar tip on how the accusative case works with meals like “raňajky” (breakfast), “obed” (lunch), and “večera” (dinner).

Bonuses

Note 1: In Slovak, the phrase “dám si” literally means – I’ll give myself – and is often used for ordering or talking about meals. The word that follows must be in the accusative case: “večera” → “večeru” (“dám si večeru” = I’ll have dinner). Some words  “obed” → “obed” (lunch) and “raňajky” → “raňajky” (breakfast) stay the same in the nominative and accusative though.

Note 2: Many daily routine verbs in Slovak are reflexive, meaning they use the pronoun “sa” (myself) like: “naraňajkujem sa” = I’ll have breakfast. “naobedujem sa” (I’ll have lunch), “navečeriam sa” (I’ll have dinner) or “umyjem sa” (I wash myself). Leaving it out changes the meaning or makes the sentence incorrect.
