Window to the World 4: Levoča-Litomyšl

In this episode of Window to the World, our series exploring international connections of Slovak towns and cities, we take you to Levoča in Slovakia and Litomyšl in Czechia — two cities that have built a strong and inspiring cross-border friendship.

The Czech town of Litomyšl and the Slovak town of Levoča share a rich cultural and historical heritage, as both are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Litomyšl is renowned for its Renaissance castle and vibrant town centre, while Levoča is famous for its Gothic architecture, especially the St. James Church with its world-famous wooden altar. Both towns showcase beautifully preserved medieval buildings, attracting visitors with their unique charm and historical significance.

Both towns have deep ties to prominent historical figures and artistic movements. Litomyšl is the birthplace of the Czech composer Bedřich Smetana, while Levoča is known for its connection to Master Paul of Levoča, a notable Gothic sculptor. These towns, with their traditional festivals and small-town atmosphere, continue to celebrate their cultural legacies, making them important centers of Central European heritage.

This 4th part of the Window to the World series was prepared by Michal Herceg from Rádio Regina, and Martin Haraj and Tatiana Žitníková from Radio Slovakia International.
