Episode 11: Shop with Ease
Whether you're grabbing groceries or picking up a few essentials, this episode of Slovak Sound Check will help you navigate the shops like a pro. We’ll walk you through key vocabulary for common items and places — like “obchod” (shop), “košík” (basket), and “pokladňa” (checkout counter). You'll also learn how to respond to useful questions like “Máte vernostnú kartu?” (Do you have a loyalty card?) and choose your payment method with ease.

Note 1:
In Slovak, adjectives must match the gender of the nouns they describe. A helpful clue for identifying feminine adjectives is the -á ending. For example, the word "pokladňa" (checkout counter) is feminine, so any adjective that describes it also needs to be in the feminine form: “(tá) otvorená pokladňa” = open checkout, “(tá) zatvorená pokladňa” = closed checkout.
Note 2:
Many Slovak verbs form their negative by simply adding the prefix “ne-”. For instance: “mám” (I have) → “nemám” (I don’t have).
