Episode 7: Express Your Mood
This week on Slovak Sound Check, we’re learning how to express how we feel. We’ll practice asking “How are you?” in both informal “Ako sa máš?” and formal “Ako sa máte?” ways, and explore a range of answers like “Mám sa dobre”, “Zle”, or “Ujde to”. You’ll also get a feel for how reflexive verbs like “mať sa” work in Slovak. Perfect for everyday chats, greetings, and small talk, this episode adds emotion and personality to your Slovak!
Vocabulary
Ako sa máš? (informal) / Ako sa máte? (formal or plural) = How are you?
Mám sa dobre / Ja sa mám dobre = I’m doing well / I feel good
A ty? (informal) / A vy? (formal) = And you?
Dobre = Good
Výborne / Skvele = Great
Zle = Bad
Fajn = Fine
Ujde to / Dá sa = I’m okay / It’s alright
Recap
Ahoj(te) = Hello
Vďaka = Thanks
Ako sa voláte? (formal) = What’s your name?
Bonuses
Mať = to have (possesive verb)
Mať sa = to feel … (reflexive verb)
Note:
In Slovak, the reflexive pronoun “sa” usually follows the verb (mám sa dobre), but when the subject (in this case – “ja”) is emphasized at the start of the sentence, “sa” shifts after the subject (ja sa mám dobre) to maintain natural word order and focus.
You can check the correct pronunciation directly in the radio recording below. (For the recap, skip to 3:30.)
