Is there such a thing as Easter music in Slovak folklore?
Renowned ethnomusicologist and senior Slovak Radio editor Ondrej Demo spent years traveling across Slovakia to document authentic folk music — and he did, in fact, record songs and customs connected to Easter.
In his legendary series “Z klenotnice ľudovej hudby” (The Treasure Box of Traditional Music), Demo journeyed from west to east and north to south, capturing the sounds and rituals of Easter Monday.
In this week’s selection of Slovak music, Martina Greňová Šimkovičová will guide you through Ondrej Demo’s program, picking traditional music with lyrics directly naming the festive season as well as with songs created for dancing parties at the end of the Easter Monday, full of water-related rituals.
