Growing Plants in Radioactive Chernobyl

When you hear the name Chernobyl what do you picture in your mind? Empty streets? Abandoned homes? Healthy lush plant life? In actual fact, Chernobyl has all of those things, and one of those things has raised the interest of one Slovak researcher. Why is such high radiation not affecting plant life? Dr Martin Hajdúch from the Slovak Academy of Science’s Institute of Plant Genetics and Biotechnology made the journey into Ukraine, on Slovakia’s eastern border, to plant seedlings in order to discover its radioactive secrets.
