Relearning Conversation: When Words Disappear

Relearning Conversation: When Words Disappear

Imagine understanding everything around you - but suddenly losing the ability to speak. This feature explores aphasia, a neurological language disorder most often caused by stroke or brain injury, through the experiences of specialists and patients working to reconnect with language. Researchers from Comenius University are developing AFAROB, an innovative Slovak project combining speech therapy, social robotics and artificial intelligence. The goal is not to replace therapists, but to make intensive communication training more accessible for people living with aphasia. Through everyday conversational scenarios, patients can repeatedly practice situations many people take for granted - from speaking at a bank to simple daily interactions. Blending medicine, technology and deeply human stories, the report examines how science is attempting to restore one of the most essential parts of human life: communication.
