The management of Muránska planina National Park is opening Javorníková Valley to the public after decades. The strictly protected area will be accessible to visitors through experiential guided tours, the national park announced on its official website.
Javorníková Valley is located in the southeastern part of Muránska planina, near the villages of Muráň and Muránska Lehota. It is characterized by steep rock cliffs, caves, and rock overhangs. In 1986, the valley was declared a state nature reserve. Since 2022, it has been classified as zone A within the national park, with the highest (fifth) level of protection.
“In the past, it was closed due to the protection of rare animal species and visitor safety. Now, after more than 35 years, it is reopening through experiential guided tours. During the excursion, you will learn more about the rare habitats, typical plant and animal species, and the methods used to protect this exceptional landscape. The guides will show you connections you might miss on a solo visit and help you perceive nature in a broader context,” the national park stated.
The guided tours through Javorníková Valley are organized by the Muránska planina National Park management as part of the Swiss-Slovak cooperation project, which supports sustainable tourism in protected areas. The number of participants in the paid excursion is limited, and an online reservation system is available on the national park’s website.
